Slow Learning Manifesto

Preamble

We believe that fast Bite-sized Learning must be complemented by in-depth Slow Learning. We are committed to spreading Slow Learning, but we also use and promote all tools and technologies of fast learning. We are experts in learning and competence development. We are guided by scientific findings and philosophical models.

Developing competencies takes a lot of time.
Competencies can only be developed through slow learning.

Competences are based on one's own personality and its development. Building such competencies with their necessary knowledge, attitude and perspective, experience and practical skills, and finally gut feeling that defies clear describability, requires thinking in longer horizons.

Humans are slower than computers. Slow learning is human learning.

The faster machines learn and synthesize unmanageable amounts of information, the more important it is to focus on the unfolding of such genuine competencies, which for the time being are reserved for humans.

Slow Learning is digital avant-garde.

Slow Learning starts from a reflective understanding of emerging technological developments and their implications for future learning needs, ways of working, and societal developments. Slow Learning is not backward-looking, but embraces the technologies of the present and future.

Slow Learning and Fast Learning are complementary. The approaches do not compete.

Fast learning oriented to solving immediate tasks is also important. Fast learning with videos, online courses, learning nuggets, etc., however, can only build up individual knowledge elements and suggest ways of acting on the surface. It must therefore fit into a broader understanding of competence development: Slow Learning is important for this.

Slow Learning is reflexive.

Great challenges, inspiring encounters in networks, effort and reflection on one's own development are essential modes of Slow Learning. Space must be given to this reflection and, in addition to dealing with oneself, this reflection usually requires a:n interlocutor:in.

Slow Learning holds the potential for happiness.

Slow Learning encourages people to recognize their own potential, to develop it and to translate it into action. In this way, learners experience self-efficacy. Experiencing self-efficacy is an essential resource for a fulfilled, happy life.
